MAC Address Lookup API

GET

Validate and convert any MAC address into standard formats.

MAC Address Lookup validates any MAC address and converts it across standard colon, dash, dot, and raw hex formats. Add addressing=true to read whether it is unicast, multicast or broadcast, and on paid plans whether it is universal or locally administered (the mark of a randomized private address). On paid plans it also becomes a MAC vendor lookup API, adding the device hardware vendor and OUI identifier.

About the MAC Address Lookup API

Pass a MAC address in any common notation. The endpoint checks validity, normalizes the address, and produces colon, dash, Cisco dot, and delimiter-free raw string representations. If an address is invalid, the formats object returns null. Set addressing=true to read the address type from its first octet: whether it is unicast, multicast or broadcast on any plan, and on paid plans whether it is universally assigned or locally administered, as the randomized private addresses used by phones and laptops are. Paid plans also return the hardware vendor and registered OUI prefix, with records refreshed weekly.

What people use it for

Network Asset Inventory
When scanning local subnets, parse raw ARP table entries into uniform colon notation to catalog connected hardware.
Rogue Device Detection
Flag unrecognized hardware on corporate Wi-Fi by checking incoming MAC prefixes against approved vendor lists on paid tiers.
Switch Configuration Generation
Sysadmins convert colon-delimited MAC addresses into Cisco dotted format to paste directly into port security ACL rules.
Packet Capture Inspection
Security analysts normalize hex strings extracted from PCAP network traces into dashed or colon formats for log correlation.

Questions.

Common questions about the MAC Address Lookup API.

Read the docs →
What MAC address formats can I pass in?
You can send addresses using colons, dashes, dots, or without any separators. The API parses standard notations and converts them into colon, dash, dot, and raw hex formats in the response.
Can the API tell whether a MAC address is randomized or multicast?
Yes. Add addressing=true and the response decodes the first octet: castType reads unicast, multicast or broadcast on any plan, and on paid plans isLocallyAdministered shows whether the address was set by software rather than burned in by a manufacturer. Phones and laptops use locally administered addresses for their randomized private Wi-Fi MACs, so that flag is the signal to look for.
Do I get the hardware vendor and OUI on the Free plan?
No, the device vendor and OUI code are premium fields reserved for paid plans. The Free plan validates the address format and returns the conversion strings, but you need Starter or higher to retrieve manufacturer details.
What would checking 50,000 MAC addresses a month cost me?
Checking 50,000 addresses uses 100,000 credits, which fits entirely within the 200,000 credits included with Starter. That volume works out to $0.30 per 1,000 lookups, or about $0.0003 per check. The Free plan includes 100 checks every month.
How frequently is the manufacturer database updated?
The database updates on a weekly cycle to incorporate newly assigned hardware prefixes. This keeps manufacturer assignments current for recently released network interfaces and connected devices.
What happens if an invalid or unassigned MAC address is submitted?
The isValid property returns false when the address is malformed, and the formats object is then null. A well-formed address whose prefix is not in the IEEE registry is still valid and still returns its oui, but vendor comes back null on paid plans. On paid plans, add addressing=true to see whether the address is locally administered, as randomized private addresses are, since those never match a manufacturer OUI.
Can I use MAC address vendor data inside commercial monitoring software?
Yes, commercial use is allowed on any paid plan. The Free tier is restricted to non-commercial testing. You may display the resulting vendor and format records within your own products, provided you do not resell the raw database directly.
