HTTP Status Code Lookup API

GET

Help your users understand what every HTTP response code means.

HTTP Status Code Lookup decodes any HTTP status code by returning its standard name and detailed description. Provide a numeric code to inspect its meaning and response behavior across standard ranges, and add details=true for a link to the defining RFC section, plus on paid plans its retry and caching behavior and the headers that go with it.

About the HTTP Status Code Lookup API

HTTP Status Code Lookup works by querying the HTTP status codes registered with IANA and defined across RFCs 9110, 6585, 4918 and others. Returns the status code name, description, category and boolean flags; with details=true it also returns a link to the defining RFC section, and on paid plans the current registry name, the RFC section itself, whether the code is safe to retry, whether RFC 9110 lets caches store it by default, and the headers the spec pairs with it (Location, Retry-After, WWW-Authenticate, Allow and so on).

Questions.

Common questions about the HTTP Status Code Lookup API.

Read the docs →
Which HTTP status codes are covered?
The service covers all standard HTTP status codes across the 1xx, 2xx, 3xx, 4xx, and 5xx ranges defined in official RFC specifications. Each lookup provides the standard name and a detailed explanation of the code.
Does it support custom or proprietary status codes?
No. The dataset is limited to standard HTTP status codes defined across RFC specifications. Unofficial codes or custom internal application codes are not supported.
How far does the Starter plan go for status code lookups?
Each lookup costs 1 credit, giving you 200,000 lookups per month on the Starter plan. That works out to about $0.00015 per call, or $0.15 per 1,000 lookups. The Free plan includes 200 lookups each month.
Are status categories and error flags included on the Free plan?
No. The category classification and error flag are premium fields available only on paid plans, as are the registry name, RFC section, retry, caching and related-header fields that details=true adds. The Free plan returns the code, standard name, description and the success, redirect and informational flags, plus a link to the defining RFC when details=true is set.
Can I display these status code definitions in a commercial tool?
Yes, commercial use is allowed on any paid plan. You can surface status code descriptions inside your own developer tools, error logs, or documentation, but you may not resell the raw API data directly.
Can it tell me whether to retry a request or which header to read?
Yes. Pass details=true and the response adds is_retryable (true for transient codes such as 408, 429 and 503), is_cacheable_by_default (the RFC 9110 heuristically cacheable list), and related_headers, such as Location for redirects and Retry-After for 429 and 503. It also returns the defining RFC section and a link to it. The link is on every plan; the RFC section, retry, caching and header fields are on paid plans.
